Artist Information
Mainline steam, first generation diesels, were familiar to C.L. Smith as visits to open pit mining, and Great Lake steamers. Raised in a railway family with close ties to the coal and iron mining, he witnessed America's heavy industries at work. Southern railway lines were well traveled when he attended College. Later as an Army Officer he experienced the great southwest's distinctive spirit and traversed its vastness. Returning to civilian life and industry, his interest in painting grew, eventually leading to a career in art. Working with oil on linen, his paintings are detailed, yet conveying the drama of light and motion. A few of his credits include: International Railway Art Exhibition-Boston in 1986, the same year his first print was issued. He is a winner of the Windsor & Newton International Competition of 1993, and the award of Merit in 1998 by the Bosque Conservatory, of Clifton, Texas. Besides numerous one man shows his paintings have appeared in the publications of Vintage Rails, cover of Narrow Gauge Gazette, and dust jacket for the book "One Man's Locomotives".
